Autumn is here which means it’s time to shake up my makeup routine a little. For those of you who know me well or follow me on Instagram or any other social media platforms you will be well aware that I don’t wear a full face of makeup every day.
I could do but if we’re being perfectly honest I’m too lazy, too cheap (I’d rather save my favourite bits for when I want to dress up) and I’d rather get up as late as possible especially on work days.
As I said I’m pretty lazy when it comes to makeup so I wanted to share with you a few of the pieces I know I can rely on to help me get through the Autumn and Winter months. I’m going to try and keep this post as brief as possible but there are a few products I LOVE so it might be wise to grab a cuppa as this could be a long one…
Autumn/ Winter skin prep must haves
Now we’re in Autumn it’s super important to moisturise (I’m awful when it comes to this) but I always keep a Clinique moisture surge overnight mask in my bag. Although it says overnight my skin can get rather dry and a tiny bit of this helps lock in moisture all day!
I’ve been using the Skinkissed serum* and as far as serums go (I’m not usually a fan) I really like this one, it’s helped clear my skin which is very prone to hormonal breakouts and creates a lovely canvas to apply makeup on top of or on its own.
Prep spray/ primer
I’ve been using the Urban Decay ‘Quick fix‘ prep spray* for quite a while now, it’s lasted me months and does exactly what it should. I tend to spray it on my makeup sponge before applying my foundation, this helps create that natural dewy look.
For the face this Autumn/ Winter
If you’re looking for an affordable natural looking foundation then look no further the GOSH X-CEPTIONAL wear foundation has got you covered (literally). I would say it’s medium coverage but is buildable for those of you who like a little more. It comes in a variety of shades which is fab because I’m super pale and struggle to find shades that are light enough. Oh and it lasts all day too.
For those of you who like the matte look with full coverage I would highly recommend the Urban Decay all nighter foundation*. A little bit of this goes a long way when applied with a dampened sponge… I like to add a little priming spray to this one as I prefer a more glowy look. This one lives up to its name and really lasts all night (and day).
When it comes to my undereyes my favourite kind of concealer has to be one in liquid form. I’ve tried so many different types from liquids to pastes, powders and creams and liquid always comes out on top. A favourite of mine is the Collection ‘lasting perfection’ concealer. It’s reasonable cost wise and lasts a long time. I use this one for everyday looks as it’s cheap to replace.
My number one concealer is the Urban Decay naked skin concealer*. The consistency of this one is the best of all the ones I’ve tried. However you do get what you pay for with this one so I tend to save it for special occasions rather than day to day wear. I have this one in a warm shade as it really helps to conceal and brighten my under eyes in times of need.
The Too Faced Chocolate Soleil* bronzer is my current go to not only because it smells like chocolate, but because it allows you to add definition to your face without looking cakey.
I own several highlighters, but the one I keep going back to has to be the Technic ‘get gorgeous’ highlighter in Pink sparkle. Not only is it extremely affordable but it gives you such a lovely glowy look which is perfect for Autumn and Winter as it’s easy to feel a little dull.
I don’t know about you but brows are the one thing I make a little bit of effort with every single day. For shaping and defining my brows I swear by the ELF cosmetics lock in liner and brow cream in Espresso. This applies best when using an arched brush and a little bit of water or priming spray as it can dry out a little after time.
To keep my brows in place I use Browcote brow gel*, which is a clear formula but keeps my brows in shape all day without fail.
I try to keep my eyes as natural as possible, I’m one of those people that just struggles when it comes to eye makeup so the simpler the better.
As I said I’m rather lazy when it comes to makeup so a simple eye look is key. My Givenchy prisme quatuor palette is my favourite for cooler weather (although it comes with a bit of a price tag). The colours in it are perfect for the time of year and are very pigmented, I wouldn’t expect anything less for the price.
My lashes are naturally rather long, but I love to wear mascara as it really opens up the eye. I use the Rimmel wonderfully real mascara* in Extreme Black all year round as it really helps lengthen my lashes, but without the clump you’d expect from a high street (cheaper) mascara.
I tend to stick to a bold lip during the colder months because I look a bit ‘washed out‘ when it gets cold. My go to liquid lip is the Urban Decay vice lipstick in Crimson. It’s matte but really long lasting on the lips and effortlessly adds a pop of colour to any look.
Another favourite of mine for Autumn is the Boutique by Sainsbury’s lipstick in GIFT OF THE GAB this one is a really dark Purple so you have to be pretty brave to wear it.
Throughout the day keeping lipstick in place is a bit of a challenge, what with eating and drinking its easy to end up with patchy lips and needing to reapply. That’s why Lipcote* has made its way into my makeup bag and is here to stay. Just a little bit of this helps seal lipstick in place so you don’t have to worry about reapplication, especially on a night out.
Finally to finish…
It’s all well and good spending a little (or a lot of time) applying your makeup. If you don’t set it in place with a good setting spray then is there any point doing it in the first place? Probably not. I’ve been using the NYX finishing spray in matte for the last year and for such an affordable product it really does what it says on the bottle.
So that’s all from me today, here you have all of my favourite bits that I’ll be using throughout the Autumn and Winter months to come!
Thanks for reading,
Love Saff x
