I told myself I didn’t need any more Summer clothes, especially polka-dotted items… I just couldn’t resist! As soon as I saw this midi skirt whilst shopping for Andy I told myself it’s ok to ‘have a look’ at the clothes in Topshop as long as you look in Topman too (because this shopping trip wasn’t about me).
I tried it on in store because it would have been rude not to and I’m not a fan of making an extra trip back into the city to return items I don’t want (I’m just too lazy). At this point I needed a little convincing to buy the skirt as I don’t usually spend this much on individual items, I asked the lady in the changing room for her opinion (I felt that she may have told me to buy it because she worked there but hey, that’s good enough reason for me). Anywaaaaayyy she said it was a perfect fit and that I should definitely buy it and I could hardly argue with her, surely she knows best? It’s her job to right? You can probably guess what happened next, I ended up walking out empty-handed bar the skirt that I treated myself to…
So er I ended up buying it and I’m so glad I did. When buying anything over £20 I have two main criteria that an item has to fit and these are:
A) I can’t live without it (AKA it completes me and will be worn until it has holes in it).
B) It’s an item that I can style in a variety of ways, which gave me the idea of writing this post.
Of course you don’t need to have the same skirt to utilise my style tips and ideas, just a midi will do!
How to style a midi skirt for daytime
With a skirt like this I try to pair it with a top that is as plain and simple as possible, as I don’t really suit clashing prints or too many bright colours. This skirt has a lovely button detail down one side and is covered in multi coloured polka dots which caught my attention instantly, which is surprising as I’m not one to go for colours…
In this outfit I decided to pair my midi skirt with a plain Black v-neck tee tied at the waist to enhance my silhouette and give me a little more shape. Of course when wearing a mainly Black skirt you have the option to pair it with almost any colour, I just try to keep it simple for day-to-day wear.
If your midi skirt is plain then it would be a great idea to pair it with a patterned or slogan tee to create an effortless casual look.
For footwear I just popped on my favourite Adidas Original’s trainers in White for a really dressed down effect, after all comfort is key (especially when you’re out and about).
For this outfit I mixed up my style a little, rather than wearing a completely plain tee I went for a button down blouse in White from New Look. It’s loose-fitting and again just made me feel totally comfortable. I wasn’t sure if the combination would work but I’d just gotten back from holiday and you just have to make do with what is clean and ready to go. The combination of buttons, more buttons and the loose fit of the blouse just makes me a happy person and that’s never a bad thing.
My bag collection is getting a little out of hand and that’s saying something for me to actually admit it… This little number was from Warehouse at Christmas time as a gift from my dad. It’s the perfect size for when you’re out and about and roomy enough to fit in the essentials I.e. snacks, phone, money and more.
Taking the midi skirt through to-night
To dress this midi skirt up a little instead of wearing a loose-fitting blouse or tee try swapping in a coloured cami top (or a plain one if you’re not so out there). The Pink Topshop scalloped cami (pictured) works perfectly when tucked into the waistband of the skirt. I tend to size up when wearing cami’s because I prefer them to be more loose fitting and comfortable.
When it comes to evening footwear my trusty trainers get swapped for flat sandals or a pair of comfortable sandaled heels for an effortless evening look. If I wasn’t so keen on having comfy shoes I’d probably opt for something a little more exciting on my feet (It’s crazy that I choose comfort over fashion right?).
A small bag or clutch would be (in my eyes) a perfect way to accessorize any outfit and the smaller the better because I can lose fewer items that way and I just really love tiny bags at the moment!
